About
Dead Swede Campground is located just off the Bighorn Scenic Byway (U.S. Highway 14) near Burgess Junction in Wyoming's Bighorn Mountains. At 8,400 feet elevation, the campground occupies a scenic spot on the banks of the South Tongue River, surrounded by lodgepole pines with craggy granite peaks rising to over 13,000 feet in the distance. The campground is named for a gentleman whose grave marker remains on the grounds. The 20 standard nonelectric sites are spread across two loops, each equipped with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. Amenities include vault toilets (two are ADA accessible), potable drinking water from a hand pump, and trash collection. Firewood bundles are available for purchase. No hookups, dump station, or showers are available. The area offers excellent fishing opportunities in the South Tongue River for rainbow, brown, and brook trout. Nearby Sibley Lake provides non-motorized boating and an accessible fishing dock. OHV trails, scenic jeep roads, and hiking trails including routes into the Cloud Peak Wilderness are easily accessible. The Red Gulch Dinosaur Tracksite and Shell Falls Visitor Center are popular nearby attractions.
