About
Dawson Cabin provides a rustic, remote getaway in the beautiful Clear Creek Canyon within the San Isabel National Forest. Nestled at the base of Ervin Peak at an elevation of about 9,600 feet, the cabin sits on the outskirts of the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness in the Sawatch Range of the Rocky Mountains. Clear Creek passes near the cabin, and the area is part of the Clear Creek Historical District, which offers a glimpse into mining history from the mid-19th century when thousands came seeking gold and silver. The cabin comfortably sleeps up to four guests and features a wood-burning stove and an indoor picnic table. Guests must bring cots or sleeping pads, as no beds are provided. There is no water or electricity available, so visitors should bring plenty of water for drinking, cooking, and washing, along with bedding, food, lanterns, matches, cooking utensils, and a first aid kit. A vault toilet is available outside. Off-road vehicle trails and hiking trails are nearby, with some trails leading into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness, home to numerous 14,000-foot peaks named after colleges like Yale, Harvard, and Princeton. The historic town of Winfield is about 5 miles up the valley, while Clear Creek Reservoir is about 5 miles east and offers fishing and boating. The nearest services are in Buena Vista, approximately 45 minutes away.
Directions
From Buena Vista, go about 15 miles north on Highway 24 toward Leadville. Turn left on County Road 390 at Clear Creek Reservoir. Go about 6 miles west on County Road 390, then turn right onto the cabin driveway. The cabin is about 100 yards from the road. From Leadville, go about 18 miles south on Highway 24 toward Buena Vista. Turn right on County Road 390 toward Clear Creek Reservoir, then follow the same directions.
