About

Whitestar Campground occupies a scenic setting at 9,300 feet elevation on the north shore of Twin Lakes Reservoir, at the base of Mount Elbert, Colorado's highest peak. The campground spreads across three distinct loops: Sage Loop offers limited shade with 28 sites, Valley Loop has 5 sites among denser ponderosa pine and spruce, and Ridge Loop provides 16 first-come, first-served sites. Sage and Valley loops accept reservations through Recreation.gov. Every site includes a picnic table with lantern pole and a fire ring with cooking grate. Vault toilets are distributed throughout the campground, and trash collection is provided. Firewood is available for purchase at the camp host site. The RV dump station is currently closed; the nearest alternative is the Leadville Sanitation Building. The location serves as an excellent base camp for hiking Mount Elbert, accessing the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, and enjoying water recreation on Twin Lakes Reservoir. A boat ramp and angler parking are located just down the road. Be prepared for high altitude effects at this elevation.

Directions

From Leadville, travel 15 miles south on US Highway 24 to CO Highway 82. Turn right (west) onto Highway 82, then turn left past Mt Elbert Power Plant into the campground.
