About

Crescent Mining Camp offers a genuine step back in time to Colorado's mining boom era. The two reservable cabins were built in the 1890s when Clear Creek Canyon attracted roughly 50,000 miners seeking gold and silver. At an elevation of approximately 10,100 feet at the base of Ervin Peak, the site provides sweeping views of the Sawatch Range and Rocky Mountains. The cabins are intentionally primitive with no electricity, heat, running water, or furnishings. Visitors must bring cots, bedding, cook stoves, lanterns, and all supplies. A vault toilet serves the site. Firewood must be brought in or collected from dead and downed trees only. The private drive features a locking gate, but the adjacent road sees heavy OHV traffic. Clear Creek Reservoir lies about 9 miles east for fishing and boating (brook trout, brown trout, tiger muskie), and the Arkansas River offers whitewater rafting nearby. Hiking trails lead into the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness with its nine fourteeners, including Mount Elbert at 14,443 feet.

Directions

From Buena Vista, head north approximately 15 miles on Highway 24 toward Leadville. Turn west on County Road 390 at Clear Creek Reservoir. Continue about 8 miles west, then turn left (south) onto Forest Road 381. The cabins are on the right, accessed via a gated private drive.
