About

Halfmoon West Campground sits at 9,900 feet elevation in the heart of Colorado's highest mountain country, providing convenient access to Mount Elbert (14,439 ft) and Mount Massive (14,421 ft) trailheads. The 17-site campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis only, with no advance reservations available. Given its proximity to Colorado's two tallest peaks, sites fill quickly during peak hiking season. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring with grate. Vault toilets are located throughout the campground. Campers should bring their own drinking water as potable water is not reliably available. The campground accommodates tents and smaller RVs, with trailer limits varying by site from 25 to 35 feet. Maximum occupancy is 8 people per site with up to 3 tents or 1 RV plus 2 tents allowed. The access road (FSR 110) is a dirt road that is not maintained in winter. High altitude sickness is possible at this elevation. Dogs must be kept leashed at all times. Firewood is available for purchase at the host site when staffed.

Directions

Continue about 3/4 mile and turn left at the Halfmoon Campground sign. Follow this road and turn right at the Halfmoon sign at the end of the pavement. This dirt road leads to the campground. Road is not maintained in winter.
