About
Dam Site Shelter is a reservable group picnic shelter situated directly below W. Kerr Scott Dam in Wilkes County, North Carolina. The shelter offers scenic views of the dam and the 1,475-acre reservoir. This is a day-use facility only; overnight camping is not permitted. The shelter features eight 8-foot picnic tables and two 10-foot ADA-accessible tables, along with a grill. Vault toilets are available nearby. Currently, no water or electricity is available at the shelter. The site provides access to the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail and Native Tree Trail, with a boat ramp located in Dam Site Park. The W. Kerr Scott Dam Visitor Assistance Center, featuring a museum and Environmental Education Center, is located adjacent to the shelter and is open Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 3:30pm.
Directions
From Wilkesboro, head west on Main Street/Hwy 268/Hwy 18 for approximately 4 miles and turn right on Reservoir Road. Turn left into the Visitor Assistance Center parking lot after 0.25 miles; the shelter is directly behind the VAC.
