About
Boomer Park Shelter is a group picnic shelter situated in Boomer Park at W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir in the scenic foothills of the eastern Blue Ridge Mountains of northwestern North Carolina. This lakefront shelter can accommodate up to 35 people and features six 7-foot picnic tables with a water spigot on-site. The facility is designed for gatherings, picnics, and special events with check-in at 8:00 AM and check-out at 8:00 PM. The 1,475-acre reservoir offers excellent recreational opportunities including boating, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. Anglers will find channel catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, threadfin shad, spotted bass, striped bass, and hybrid striped bass. The area features forests of mixed hardwoods including sycamore, poplar, oak, and hickory, with abundant wildlife such as white-tailed deer, black bear, eastern cottontails, wild turkey, and various songbirds. Boomer Park Shelter is strictly a day-use facility with no overnight camping permitted. Reservations are made through Recreation.gov, and an additional $5 per vehicle day-use entry fee applies beyond the shelter reservation cost.
Directions
From Charlotte, take I-77 North approximately 60 miles, then merge onto Highway 421 North towards Wilkesboro/Boone. Continue to Exit 286B (approximately 20 miles), turn left onto Highway 268 and continue for approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto Boomer Road and the park will be on the right in approximately 1/4 mile. From Winston-Salem, take Highway 421 North approximately 55 miles to Exit 286B, turn left onto Highway 268 and continue for approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto Boomer Road and the park will be on the right in approximately 1/4 mile.
