This is a day-use picnic shelter only. No overnight camping is permitted. The shelter is reservable through Recreation.gov for daytime use.
About
Boomer Park Shelter is a reservable day-use picnic pavilion situated at Boomer Park on the shores of W. Kerr Scott Dam and Reservoir in northwestern North Carolina. The shelter provides a scenic lakefront setting with six 7-foot picnic tables and a water spigot, though no electricity is available. This facility is ideal for family gatherings, picnics, and group events. The surrounding park offers additional amenities including a playground, grills, accessible vault toilets, a swim beach, and a boat ramp providing access to the 1,475-acre reservoir. The lake supports excellent boating, canoeing, kayaking, and swimming. Anglers can pursue channel catfish, largemouth and smallmouth bass, bluegill, spotted bass, striped bass, and hybrid striped bass. The region features mixed hardwood forests of sycamore, poplar, oak, and hickory in the scenic Yadkin River valley at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Wildlife includes white-tailed deer, black bear, and various bird species including wild turkey and wood ducks. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited.
Directions
From Charlotte, take I-77 North approximately 60 miles, then merge onto Highway 421 North towards Wilkesboro/Boone. Continue to Exit 286B (approximately 20 miles), turn left onto Highway 268 and continue for approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto Boomer Road and the park will be on the right in approximately 1/4 mile. From Winston-Salem, take Highway 421 North approximately 55 miles to Exit 286B, turn left onto Highway 268 and continue for approximately 6 miles. Turn left onto Boomer Road and the park will be on the right in approximately 1/4 mile.
