About

Located along the scenic Custer Motorway in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, Custer #1 Campground provides a rustic base camp for exploring Idaho's historic mining country. The campground sits just above the ghost town of Custer, a boom town during the late 1800s gold rush era. Visitors can tour the Custer Museum, which is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. from Memorial Day through Labor Day, and explore the nearby Yankee Fork Gold Dredge. The campground features 6 campsites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring with cooking grill. A vault toilet is provided, but campers must bring their own water as no potable water is available on-site. The campground can accommodate trailers and motorhomes up to 32 feet long and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations accepted. The Custer Motorway provides access to excellent fishing opportunities along the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River. The remote location offers a quiet camping experience surrounded by the rugged mountains of central Idaho. The area is rich in mining history, with interpretive sites and historic structures scattered throughout the region.
