Custer #1 Campground

Closed

Currently closed for the season. The campground opens June 15 and operates through fall. First-come, first-served only; no reservations accepted.

About

Custer #1 Campground sits along the scenic Custer Motorway in the Salmon-Challis National Forest, positioned just above the historic townsite of Custer. This area was a thriving gold rush boom town during the late 1800s, and today the preserved townsite includes a museum that operates daily from 9 AM to 5 PM between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The campground offers six primitive sites, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring with cooking grill. A vault toilet serves the campground, but there is no potable water available, so campers must bring their own supply. The sites can accommodate trailers and motorhomes up to 32 feet in length. Access is via Forest Road 013 from Highway 75 at the Sunbeam Dam overlook, approximately 11 miles up the Custer Motorway. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations available.

Directions

From Stanley, drive 11 miles east on Highway 75 to the Sunbeam Dam overlook. Turn left onto Forest Road 013 and continue about 11 miles. The campground is on the left. From Challis, drive 42 miles west on Highway 75 to the Sunbeam Dam overlook, then turn right onto Forest Road 013 for about 11 miles.
