About
Stovepipe Springs Dispersed Camping Area is located in the heart of Idaho's Sawtooth National Recreation Area, part of the larger Sawtooth National Forest. Situated in Custer County near the community of Stanley, this designated dispersed camping area sits at approximately 5,880 feet elevation near Muley Creek and Upper O'Brien Campground. As a designated dispersed camping area, Stovepipe Springs differs from both fully developed campgrounds and unrestricted dispersed camping. Sites are marked with posts bearing a camp symbol, and some may include basic amenities like fire rings to protect natural resources. Camping here is free, but visitors must be self-sufficient and practice Leave No Trace principles. The Sawtooth NRA has specific occupancy limits: campers may stay no more than 10 days within any 30-day period within a 30-mile radius between May 1 and September 15, or 16 days within any 30-day period between September 16 and April 30. Access may be limited during winter months due to snow and road conditions.
