Bonanza CCC Group Campground occupies a beautiful valley setting near the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River in the Salmon-Challis National Forest. Lodgepole pines are scattered throughout, providing limited shade, and summer wildflowers are abundant. The campground features 12 camp spurs averaging 45-50 feet deep, a central gathering area, two large fire rings in the group area, plus individual fire rings with cooking grills and picnic tables at each spur. Potable water is supplied by a spring on site. The Yankee Fork drainage has a rich mining history easily accessible from the campground. Within a mile lies the ghost town of Bonanza, and two miles further is Custer. The Yankee Fork Gold Dredge towers over the stream near Custer, with interpretive tours offered Memorial Day through Labor Day. Sunbeam Dam site, nine miles down the canyon, provides interpretive information about the only dam ever built on the Salmon River. Recreation opportunities abound with excellent fishing for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, and whitefish in the Yankee Fork. Multiple trails crisscross the area, including West Fork of Yankee Fork, Crimson Lake Trail, and Lightning Creek Trail, all with trailheads near the campground.

Directions

From Highway 75, turn onto Yankee Fork Road (Forest Road 013) at Sunbeam Dam overlook. Travel approximately seven miles north on Yankee Fork Road and turn left at the Bonanza Guard Station onto Forest Road 074. Continue for approximately half a mile to the campground.
