Closed — Closed for the season. The access road is gated on December 1st. Opens June 2 and remains open through fall until snow conditions require closure. Access beyond the winter gate is by snowmobile, skis, snowshoes, or hiking only.

Crystal Lake Group Campsite sits in the heart of the Big Snowy Mountains south of Lewistown, Montana, at an elevation of 5,700 feet. Located in the basin near Crystal Lake, the site offers convenient access to the lake and trail system while nestled among scattered trees in an alpine meadow setting. The group site features asphalt walkways, tent pads, additional meadow space for larger tents, two large picnic tables, and a metal fire ring. A parking area behind the gate can accommodate vehicles or up to two RVs (35 feet maximum). Crystal Lake provides excellent opportunities for swimming, fishing, and canoeing in a stunning mountain setting. The trail system radiating from the campground includes the Ice Caves Trail, which leads to a cave with ancient hieroglyphs, and the Crystal Cascades Trail featuring scenic waterfalls. The complex offers exceptional photo opportunities and views of the surrounding Big Snowy Mountains. Access to the campground requires a 20-mile drive south from Lewistown, with the last 6 miles on a narrow paved road. Additional first-come, first-served campsites are available in the adjacent Crystal Lake Campground. The remote location and seasonal closure make this an ideal summer and fall destination for groups seeking a mountain camping experience.

Directions

From Lewistown, drive west on Montana Highway 200/US 87 for about 8 miles. Turn left (south) on Crystal Lake Road. Continue south, following the well-signed directions to the lake for 20 miles. At the T junction, turn left and continue to Crystal Lake. The last 6 miles is paved and mostly single lane. On December 1, the paved section is gated.
