About
Crooked Lake Campsite offers a single primitive camping spot on a 21-acre lake in the Rapid River/Manistique Ranger District of Hiawatha National Forest. The site is small and level, measuring approximately 35 feet by 35 feet, suitable for one family and a trailer. Nestled among hardwood trees, paper birch, aspen, and oak on a hill overlooking the lake, the site provides a rustic forest setting. The lake offers good fishing opportunities for bluegill, crappie, and northern pike, with occasional smallmouth bass catches. Boat access is by carry-in only from the campsite. Anglers and other members of the public may pass through the campsite to access the shared boat launch. Although there is only one campsite on Crooked Lake, the lake has a private resort and many private homes and cabins along its shoreline, so solitude is limited compared to other remote sites in the forest. This is a true primitive site with no amenities. There are no toilets or potable water available, so campers must bring their own water and practice Leave No Trace principles. Swimming is considered poor. The site is reservation-only during the operating season and accessible via a hard-pack sandy road. Gasoline, groceries, fishing supplies, and other services are available in Steuben, approximately four miles southwest.
Directions
From Manistique, drive north 25 miles on M-94 to FR 2246 (Clear Lake Road). Turn right and drive 0.15 mile to FR 2661. Turn right and drive 0.25 mile south on the hard-pack sandy road to the campsite.
