About
Colwell Lake Campground is located on the eastern shore of 145-acre Colwell Lake in the heart of Hiawatha National Forest on Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The campground features 35 individual family sites, including 5 with electric hookups, 2 walk-in tent sites along the lakeshore, and a group site accommodating up to 24 people. Sites are equipped with campfire rings, lantern posts, and tent pads, with vault toilets and drinking water distributed throughout the facility. The lake offers excellent fishing opportunities for largemouth bass, northern pike, crappie, pumpkinseed sunfish, perch, and bluegill. A sandy swimming beach with adjacent picnic area provides family-friendly recreation, while an accessible fishing pier and boat launch with adequate parking and trailer turn-around serve anglers and boaters. The campground also features a leisurely 2-mile hiking and snowshoeing trail through forested terrain of mixed deciduous and conifer trees. Renovated in 1993, the facility meets most Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines. The campground is centrally located within the forest, with Big Island, Fish, and Straits lakes all within 25 miles. Reservations are available through Recreation.gov.
