Council Grounds Campground

Council Grounds State Park occupies land historically used for Native American seasonal gatherings, now preserved as a 508-acre recreation area where the Wisconsin River meets Lake Alexander. The campground is heavily wooded, providing shade and privacy across its 52 family campsites. Nineteen sites offer electrical hookups for RVs, while the remaining sites accommodate tent camping. Three group campsites can host larger parties with wheeled campers. Water-based recreation dominates the park experience. The 271-foot swimming beach on Lake Alexander features a gradual drop-off suitable for families. An accessible fishing pier extends into the lake, and a boat landing provides access to both the lake and the Wisconsin River. Several miles of hiking trails wind through the forest, and the park supports hunting and fishing in season. The campground operates seasonally from May 1 through October 31, with shower and flush toilet facilities available mid-May through mid-October. Reservations are required and can be made up to 11 months in advance through the Wisconsin state park reservation system. Firewood is available for purchase at the park office.
