Cottonwood Cove

Cottonwood Cove Campground occupies a sandy stretch of shoreline on Guernsey Reservoir's northeastern shore within Guernsey State Park. The 14 sites are divided into three groupings: sites 1-6 cluster beneath mature cottonwood trees near the campground's only vault toilet and water hydrant, while sites 7-13 sit farther east against another cottonwood stand with partial shade. The sandy terrain provides excellent beach access when reservoir levels are high, typically from mid-May through mid-to-late July. Access is via a half-mile gravel road that turns north just before the Sandy Beach Fee Booth. This is a primitive campground with no hookups. The reservoir experiences an annual silt run after July 4th that significantly lowers water levels, increasing the distance from campsites to the water's edge. Water systems throughout the park are winterized October 1 and remain unavailable through approximately April. Guernsey State Park's historic CCC-era architecture and museum add cultural interest beyond camping. The park offers 19 campgrounds total, with hookup sites available at Sandy Beach and Sandy Point on the west side of the reservoir for those needing electrical or water connections.

Directions

From Guernsey, head north on US-26 for approximately 1 mile, then turn left onto Lake Side Drive into Guernsey State Park. Follow the main park road and turn north just before the Sandy Beach Fee Booth. Continue on the gravel road for half a mile to reach Cottonwood Cove.
