Open year-round. Water systems and comfort stations operate May 15 through September 27. Electric hookups available year-round. Campsites are reservable from the third Friday in May through the third Sunday in September, up to three months in advance. The spring 2026 shoreline restoration project has concluded.

A strong and slow moving weather system will impact the region tonight through Sunday. Well above normal atmospheric moisture levels combined with the dynamics from this storm system will provide the potential for heavy rainfall during this period. Thunderstorms embedded in the more general rainfall will have the potential to produce flash flooding, particularly over recent burn scars. * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is possible, along with Flash Flooding of recent burn scars. * WHERE...All of South Central Montana, Portions of Southeast Montana, and Sheridan County Wyoming. * WHEN...From 6 PM MDT this evening through Sunday afternoon. * IMPACTS...Excessive runoff may result in flooding of creeks and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - 1 to 2.5 inches of rainfall is expected across the watch area tonight through Sunday. Locally heavier totals up to 4 inches are possible where thunderstorm activity is more persistent. - The Robertson Draw, East Side, Elk, and McGhee-Remington burn scars are particularly vulnerable to Flash Flooding and debris flows during the watch period. Cooney State Park sits on Cooney Reservoir, a 770-acre impoundment 22 miles southwest of Laurel in Carbon County. The reservoir is renowned for excellent walleye and rainbow trout fishing and serves as a popular destination for boating, water skiing, jet skiing, and swimming. The surrounding landscape offers scenic views of the Beartooth Mountains. The park features five campground loops with 82 total campsites plus three group use areas. Marshall Cove Campground offers the most developed amenities including metered showers and flush toilets. Nineteen sites have electric hookups with 15, 20, 30, and 50 amp service available, and some sites offer water and sewer connections. Pull-through sites accommodate larger RVs. All campgrounds have vault toilets, drinking water (seasonal), fire rings, and picnic tables. Beyond camping, the park provides multiple boat ramps, docks, a fish cleaning station, swimming beach, playground, volleyball court, and horseshoe pits. Winter activities include ice fishing and cross-country skiing. A camp host is present during the busy season, and ADA-accessible sites are available.
