About
Cooney State Park is the most popular recreation area in south central Montana, located just 40 minutes south of Billings on Cooney Reservoir. The 309-acre park stretches around a 1,078-acre reservoir created in 1937 and offers stunning views of the Beartooth Mountains. The park is renowned for excellent walleye and rainbow trout fishing, with year-round fishing opportunities including popular ice fishing during winter months. The park features five campgrounds with 82 campsites total, including 19 sites with electrical hookups. Three boat ramps with docks provide ample access to the water for boating, water-skiing, sailing, and windsurfing. A fish cleaning station is located at Red Lodge Arm. Marshall Cove Campground offers metered showers available to all registered campers. Recreational opportunities abound year-round with boating, swimming, fishing, camping, hiking, bicycling, bird watching, and wildlife viewing in summer. Winter activities include ice fishing, ice skating, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The park includes three group use areas, picnic facilities, a playground, and sand volleyball court. At 4,252 feet elevation, the park is open 24 hours daily year-round, though winter snow drifts may affect road access.
