About
Basin Campground is nestled along the West Fork of Rock Creek, 7 miles west of Red Lodge, Montana, via paved Forest Road 2071. Situated at 6,800 feet elevation in the Custer Gallatin National Forest, the campground features 30 sites including three accessible sites, each with a picnic table and campfire ring with grill. The area was burned by the Cascade Fire in 2008, leaving an open landscape filled with wildflowers and scenic views. The campground provides excellent access to outdoor recreation. Fishing is popular along the West Fork of Rock Creek and at nearby Wild Bill Lake, which features an accessible fishing dock and allows kayaking and canoeing. The Basin Lakes Trailhead is located just across the road from the campground, providing access to the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness via Silver Run Plateau, West Fork, and Timberline Lakes Trails. Mountain bikers enjoy the Ingles Creek Trail and loop trails at Silver Run, with biking also permitted on the Basin Lakes Trail. The charming town of Red Lodge is just 7 miles away, offering dining, lodging, galleries, and shops. The campground is also close to the Beartooth Highway, which climbs through the rugged Beartooth Mountains and is considered one of America's most scenic drives. Bears frequent the area, so food storage regulations must be followed.
Directions
From US Highway 212 (Beartooth Scenic Byway), travel to the south end of Red Lodge. Turn west on West Fork Rock Creek Road (Forest Road 2071) and proceed approximately 7 miles to the campground entrance on the right.
