About

Situated in a heavily forested area adjacent to Cook Lake in northeastern Wyoming, Cook Lake Recreation Area is one of the Black Hills National Forest's more secluded destinations. The campground sits tucked into the hillside above the lake, with sites that are widely spaced. Some sites open up to views overlooking the water, while others nestle along the hillside. Tall mature trees and grassy underbrush give the area a groomed yet natural character, with separation providing privacy between sites. The recreation area offers diverse opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts. Cook Lake supports populations of rainbow and brown trout, along with various sunfish and catfish species, making it popular for fishing. Floating docks provide anglers greater access to the water. Non-motorized boating and kayaking are permitted. Approximately 4 miles of hiking and mountain biking trails are available, including a shoreline trail ideal for families. Note that the Cook Lake Trail and Loop A remain closed due to a landslide, though plenty of recreation opportunities remain accessible. The campground operates seasonally with peak season running mid-May through early September when reservations are available. Shoulder seasons operate on a first-come, first-served basis until the December 15 annual closure. Water is typically unavailable from October 1 through May 15. The location remains relatively isolated from the heavy visitation of the central Black Hills, offering visitors a more tranquil and secluded nature experience.
