About
Karta Lake Cabin sits on the eastern shore of Karta Lake in the Karta River Wilderness, surrounded by second-growth spruce, hemlock, and cedar forest with views of snow-capped peaks. The 12x12-foot pan-abode cedar log cabin sleeps up to six on wooden bunkbeds and is equipped with a table, benches, cooking counter, cupboards, and a small wood/biobrick stove for heat. An outhouse and aluminum skiff with oars are provided. The area is renowned for excellent fishing including rainbow and cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden, steelhead, and four species of salmon. The 5-mile Karta River Trail connects to Karta River and Salmon Lake cabins, providing access to prime fishing spots and wildlife viewing. Black bears, wolves, Sitka black-tailed deer, beavers, otters, and various waterfowl including trumpeter swans frequent the area. Access is by float plane (34 air miles from Ketchikan) or by boat to Karta Bay (10 miles from Hollis) followed by a 1.5-mile moderate trail. Helicopter access is prohibited in this designated Wilderness Area. The lake surface may freeze in fall through early spring, preventing float plane landings. Guests must bring sleeping gear, cooking equipment, food, water, toilet paper, garbage bags, and personal flotation devices.
