About
Harris River Campground sits along the banks of the Harris River on Prince of Wales Island within the Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the United States. The campground provides 14 drive-in campsites suitable for tents and small to medium-sized RVs, each equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Two vault toilets serve the campground, and trash collection is available, but there is no potable water on site. The campground serves as a base for exploring the surrounding rainforest ecosystem. The Twentymile Spur Trail follows the Harris River through its steep valley and ends at a set of beaver ponds. A short boardwalk trail within the campground offers close-up views of muskeg habitat without getting wet. A footbridge connects to the Harris River Picnic Area across the river, and the Harris River Interpretive Trail two miles east provides information about river restoration work. Salmon fishing is a major draw, with excellent fishing available right beside the campground in the lower Harris River. This is bear country, so all food and trash must be properly stored in approved bear-proof containers. The campground is accessible via the Inter-Island Ferry from Ketchikan to Hollis, followed by a 10-mile drive on the paved Craig-Hollis Highway.
Directions
From Ketchikan, take the Inter-Island Ferry to Hollis on Prince of Wales Island. From Hollis, take Highway 924 (Craig-Hollis Highway) for approximately 10 miles. The campground is on the left (south) side of the road just past the Hydaburg Road junction, adjacent to the Harris River.
