About

City of Rocks National Reserve, established in 1988, encompasses 14,407 acres of land renowned for its scenic, geologic, and historic significance. The reserve features some of the finest granite climbing anywhere, with the younger granite of the Almo Pluton providing exceptional rock quality across approximately 700 developed routes. Geologists estimate the oldest granite formations exceed 2.5 billion years in age. The camping area offers 64 standard campsites and 3 group sites nestled among aspen, juniper, mountain mahogany, and pine trees, providing easy access to climbing areas, hiking trails, and scenic vistas. Campers can spend nights surrounded by impressive granite formations and dark starry skies. The reserve was an important landmark on the historic California Trail, and visitors can still observe pioneer inscriptions and wagon ruts. Beyond climbing, the reserve provides ample opportunities for hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding across more than 22 miles of trails leading to arches, windows, and dramatic overlooks. Winter months offer excellent conditions for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. The reserve is managed cooperatively by the National Park Service and Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation.
