About

City of Rocks Campground sits within a remarkable landscape of granite spires and domes that rise dramatically from the high desert sagebrush at elevations around 6,000 feet. The 64 standard campsites and 3 group sites (Juniper, Twin Sisters, and Bread Loaves) are distributed along City of Rocks Road and Twin Sisters Road, offering varying degrees of shade from aspen, juniper, mountain mahogany, and pine trees. Sites range from tent-only to those accommodating RVs up to 28 feet, though the campground is fairly primitive with gravel roads and steep sections in places. The reserve is internationally renowned for technical rock climbing, with hundreds of routes on the granite formations. Hikers can explore trails past historic California Trail inscriptions where emigrants carved names and messages into the soft rock during the 1840s-60s. Stargazing is exceptional due to minimal light pollution. Summer temperatures typically range from lows in the 40s to highs in the 80s, with afternoon thunderstorms common. Winter brings snow accumulation and sub-freezing temperatures. Reservations are required year-round through Idaho State Parks and can be made up to 9 months in advance online or by phone. Same-day reservations are accepted subject to availability. The nearby Smoky Mountain Campground offers additional amenities including electrical hookups, showers, and flush toilets for those seeking more developed facilities.
