About

City of Rocks State Park preserves a striking one-square-mile field of volcanic rock pinnacles that formed approximately 35 million years ago from the Kneeling Nun Tuff eruption. The sculpted columns rise as high as 40 feet, creating an otherworldly landscape at 5,259 feet elevation in the Chihuahuan Desert. The campground wraps around these formations, with many sites offering views of the rock spires. The park offers 49 campsites split between developed non-electric sites and sites with 30-amp or 50-amp electric plus water hookups. Full-service comfort stations with flush toilets and hot showers are open 7 AM to 5 PM daily at the visitor center, with vault toilets available around the clock. No dump station is on-site; the nearest is at Rockhound State Park in Deming. Beyond camping, the park features 5.5 miles of trails for hiking and mountain biking, a desert botanical garden, and an observatory for exceptional dark-sky stargazing. The visitor center houses interpretive exhibits about the geology and natural history of the region.
