Rockhound State Park occupies 1,100 acres on the western slopes of the Little Florida Mountains at elevations between 4,520 and 5,400 feet. The park is a destination for mineral collectors, as visitors are permitted to take up to 15 pounds of rocks per person per day. Common finds include agates, jasper, quartz crystals, flow-banded rhyolite, and perlite. The desert landscape offers dramatic views of the surrounding basins and mountain ranges. The campground has 28 sites split between a main loop with 23 electric sites and a non-electric section with 5 primitive sites. Most electric sites have 30-amp service with water hookups, though Site 6 and the ADA site offer 50-amp. Site 11 has full hookups including sewer. Sites accommodate RVs from 30 to 45 feet depending on location. All sites have picnic tables under shade shelters and fire rings, though Stage II fire restrictions currently prohibit campfires. Facilities include flush restrooms with hot showers, a dump station, playground, group shelters, and a visitor center with interpretive exhibits and a gift shop. Three miles of hiking trails wind through the rocky terrain, offering wildlife viewing and birding opportunities in the Chihuahuan Desert ecosystem.

Directions

From Deming, take NM Highway 11 south for approximately 5 miles, then turn east on Rockhound Road (State Road 141) and continue 9 miles to the park entrance.
