Railroad Canyon Campground is located in the Black Range Mountains of Gila National Forest at 7,039 feet elevation, serving as a key portal to the Aldo Leopold Wilderness. This small, primitive campground appeals to nature seekers and backcountry enthusiasts planning trips into the wilderness. Amenities are minimal but adequate, including three picnic tables and vault toilets, with a small intermittent creek running through the grounds. The campground provides access to multiple trails, including the Gallinas Canyon Trail that heads north from the campground. The campground operates year-round on a first-come, first-served basis with no fees or passes required. Campers must bring their own water as potable water is not available on-site. Pets are allowed but must be leashed. Several restrictions apply: OHV/ATV use, hunting, shooting, and horse camping are prohibited within the campground, though horseback riding on adjacent trails is permitted. The stay limit is 14 consecutive days. Located on the north side of New Mexico Highway 35 between mileposts 25 and 26, the campground has limited parking and is not suitable for large RVs.
