About

McMillan Campground is a small, no-fee campground located in a scenic riparian canyon along Cherry Creek in Gila National Forest. Situated approximately 15 miles north of Silver City on Highway 15, the campground features only 3 small campsites nestled among tall conifers, making it an intimate and private camping experience. The campground sits at 6,967 feet elevation and offers cool temperatures in summer and spectacular fall colors when the evergreens contrast with golden aspen, rustic scrub oaks, and bright red sumac vines. Cherry Creek runs in front of the campground and provides a pleasant water feature when flowing, though water levels vary with rainfall. The campground is not suitable for large RVs or trailers; sites accommodate cars, vans, pickup trucks, and small trailers only. No potable water is available on-site, and firewood is not available in the area, so campers must bring their own wood, charcoal, or use propane stoves. All sites are first-come, first-served with no reservation system. The campground is generally open year-round, though it may occasionally close in winter due to heavy ice buildup for public safety. A 14-day stay limit applies. The location provides access to mountain biking, hiking, horseback riding, and wildlife viewing opportunities. Silver City, with full services including grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants, is the nearest town.

Directions

From Silver City, follow New Mexico Highway 15 north approximately 15 miles. The campground is located on the east side of Highway 15.
