Generally open year-round for overnight use. Stage 1 fire restrictions are in effect as of March 23, 2026 due to severe drought conditions. During monsoon season (July 1 through September 3), the campground may be restricted to day use only due to flooding potential.

Kingston Campground is a small, no-fee primitive campground in the Gila National Forest, positioned along New Mexico Highway 152 near mile marker 40 at the eastern edge of the historic mining town of Kingston. At 6,160 feet elevation in the Black Range Ranger District, the campground sits near Middle Percha Creek in the scenic Black Range mountains. The campground offers basic amenities including a vault toilet, but campers must bring their own drinking water as potable water is not available. Parking is limited to two vehicles per campsite. OHV and ATV use is prohibited within the campground, and hunting or shooting is not allowed. Stock animals are also prohibited in the immediate campground area. Access via NM Highway 152 from San Lorenzo involves steep grades and numerous tight turns. Trucks without retarder brakes and/or longer than 40 feet are prohibited on this section of highway. An alternate route from Silver City follows U.S. Highway 180 east approximately 9 miles to NM Highway 152, then east about 40 miles to the signed campground.

Directions

From Silver City, follow U.S. Highway 180 east approximately 9 miles to New Mexico Highway 152. Turn left (east) onto Highway 152 and continue about 40 miles to the signed Kingston Campground on the north side of Highway 152, at the east end of the Town of Kingston.
