About

Iron Creek Campground is a free, developed campground located in the scenic Black Range Mountains of Gila National Forest at approximately 7,200 feet elevation. The campground features 12 individual campsites along New Mexico Highway 152, part of the Geronimo Trail National Scenic Byway. Each site includes a picnic table and fire pit, with vault toilets available but no potable water on-site. The campground sits in a mountainous pine forest environment offering cooler temperatures and scenic views. The watersheds above the campground were severely burned during the 2013 Silver Fire, and visitors should be aware that flash flooding can occur during rainstorms. The surrounding area offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, scenic drives, and access to the Black Range, though no trails begin directly at the campground. Access is via NM Highway 152, a winding mountain road with steep grades and tight curves. The highway department prohibits trucks longer than 40 feet and trucks without retarder brakes on the section between San Lorenzo and Kingston. The campground is located between mile markers 28 and 29, approximately east of Silver City. Mimbres offers the nearest basic services including a store, gas station, and restaurants, while Silver City provides full amenities.
