About

Upper Gallinas Campground sits at 6,909 feet elevation in the Black Range Mountains along New Mexico Highway 152, approximately 37 miles east of Silver City. The campground provides convenient access to the Gallinas Canyon Trail and surrounding Gila National Forest wilderness. The upper portions of the Gallinas watershed were severely burned during the 2013 Silver Fire, and while the area is healing, flash flooding remains a possibility. This primitive campground features a vault toilet, three picnic tables, and two pull-through parking areas surfaced with gravel. A steel corral accommodates equestrian visitors, and stock use is permitted in the immediate campground area. No potable water is available, so campers must bring their own supply. The nearest services, including general stores, are located approximately 17 miles west in the Mimbres Valley. The campground operates year-round on a first-come-first-served basis with no fees and a 14-day stay limit. Note that NM Highway 152 permanently prohibits trucks over 40 feet or those without retarder brakes due to steep mountain grades.

Directions

From Silver City, travel east on NM Highway 152 approximately 37 miles. The campground is located on the north side of the highway between mileposts 26 and 27.
