About
Cimarron Campground is located in the Cimarron Recreation Area within the 108,175-acre Cimarron National Grassland, the largest area of public land in Kansas. The campground features 12 campsites surrounded by tall cottonwood trees, providing shade and a scenic setting in the otherwise open prairie landscape. The location offers exceptional bird watching opportunities with a great variety of species visiting the area.
The campground provides easy access to the Cimarron Fishing Ponds, which were constructed for migratory birds and are stocked with fish by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks. The Turkey Trail is also accessible from the recreation area. Despite the remote prairie setting, the campground offers essential amenities including vault toilets and potable water from faucets. The grassland also features the historic Santa Fe National Historic Trail and offers opportunities for wildlife viewing, photography, hunting, and exploring the unique shortgrass prairie ecosystem.
Situated in Morton County in southwestern Kansas, the campground experiences light usage and operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Visitors should be prepared with cash or check for the overnight fee and should be aware of any fire restrictions in effect during their visit.
Directions
From Elkhart, Kansas, take Highway 27 north approximately 7 miles. Turn east onto Forest Service Road 700.2 and continue for 4 miles. The campground is located on the north side of the road.
