About
Chopawamsic Backcountry Area offers a wilderness-like camping experience within Prince William Forest Park, one of the largest parcels of undeveloped land in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The name Chopawamsic comes from Algonquian meaning "small, divided river flats." Eight designated tent sites are spread along a 2.2-mile loop trail, each marked by wooden posts where tents must be pitched within 20 feet. This is true primitive camping: no potable water is available, campfires are strictly prohibited (camp stoves only), and campers must pack out all trash. A single vault toilet is located at the parking area but not at the campsites. Pets are not allowed in the backcountry area. Maximum stay is 7 consecutive nights or 21 nights per calendar year, with a limit of 6 people per site. Breckenridge Reservoir is accessible by trail for fishing, with bluegill, pumpkinseed, largemouth bass, and channel catfish. The park's 37 miles of hiking trails can be accessed by driving to trailheads along Scenic Drive. Nearby attractions include the National Museum of the Marine Corps and historic battlefields at Fredericksburg and Manassas.
