About
Choke Canyon State Park provides a South Texas retreat on the shores of the 26,000-acre Choke Canyon Reservoir, situated between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. The park consists of two distinct units: the Calliham Unit, a full-service facility with overnight camping and comprehensive amenities, and the South Shore Unit, which operates as day-use only with boating, fishing, and birding access. The reservoir is renowned for excellent fishing opportunities, particularly for largemouth bass and catfish. Anglers can fish from shore without a license or launch from boat ramps at both units. The Calliham Unit features fish cleaning shelters, a rock jetty, and an on-site bait shop. The park serves as an important stopover along bird migration routes, with a dedicated Birding Trail showcasing everything from water birds to songbirds throughout the seasons. Camping options at the Calliham Unit include 40 sites with water and electric hookups, nine walk-in tent sites with water nearby, and a youth group camp for up to 50 supervised youth. The park also offers cabin rentals and various group facilities including pavilions and halls. Recreational amenities include hiking trails, basketball and tennis courts, soccer fields, and opportunities for geocaching and swimming. The park is surrounded by the James E. Daughtrey Wildlife Management Area, providing excellent wildlife viewing in the South Texas brush country.
