About
Head to Chicken Creek Campground for an excellent camping experience on Tenkiller Ferry Lake, one of Oklahoma's premier water recreation destinations. This Army Corps of Engineers campground is one of the most popular on the lake, featuring 103 campsites all equipped with electric hookups, along with modern amenities including two comfort stations with hot showers, flush toilets, water hydrants, a swim beach, playground, dump station, and a boat ramp complex. The campground also offers group shelters with electricity for day use. Tenkiller Ferry Lake is often called Oklahoma's clear water paradise. The 12,500-acre lake is sourced by the Illinois River and the Baron Fork, both designated Oklahoma Scenic Rivers, and offers 130 miles of shoreline nestled in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains. The area known as Green Country is surrounded by dense oak-hickory forests, tall bluffs, and rolling hills. Water skiing, boating, fishing, swimming, and hiking are popular activities. Prevailing winds and secluded coves create ideal conditions for sailing, while scuba divers enjoy the lake's clear waters and high visibility. Fishing is excellent for black bass, white bass, striped bass, crappie, and catfish. The campground provides convenient access to wildlife viewing, with abundant deer and turkey in the area. The lake serves as a flyway for migratory birds including bald eagles, common loons, and white pelicans. Nearby attractions include Tenkiller State Park with its nature center and scuba diving park, the Sequoyah National Wildlife Refuge near Vian, and the historic city of Tahlequah, capital of the Cherokee Nation. The scenic upper Illinois River near Tahlequah offers excellent canoeing and rafting, while the lower Illinois near Gore provides access to one of only two year-round trout fisheries in Oklahoma.
Directions
From Gore, Oklahoma, go 17.5 miles northeast on Highway 100, turn left and go 1.5 miles northwest on the paved access road. Follow signs into the campground.
