About
Chickamauga Battlefield Group Campground is a specialized camping facility located within Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. This campground is not open to the general public and is exclusively reserved for organized non-profit 501(c) youth groups, such as scout troops and church youth groups, under adult supervision. The purpose of this restriction is to provide educational opportunities for youth groups to learn about the historic resources of the Chickamauga Battlefield. The campground offers nine group tent sites situated in a tree-sheltered setting surrounded by hardwood deciduous forest. Each site is equipped with a picnic table, fire ring with grill, and lantern pole. Sites 1, 3, and 4 have potable water spigots, and vault toilets are centrally located between sites 3 and 4. An amphitheater-style area within the campground is available on a first-come, first-served basis for group programs. Groups must select sites appropriate for their size and are responsible for camping only within their designated site boundaries. The park's 9,000+ acres provide extensive recreational opportunities, including approximately 50 miles of hiking trails. The park has developed recommended trail routes highlighting specific battlefield stories, with many trails offering badge opportunities for scouts. Biking is permitted on all paved and service roads, and horseback riding is allowed on designated trails. Groups may request ranger tours or ranger-led activities. The Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center is 1.5 miles by vehicle or 0.45 miles on foot from the campground. Campers are expected to follow Leave No Trace principles, and firewood collection from dead and downed wood within the park is permitted to prevent the spread of invasive species.
