Cheoah Point Cabin 2

Closed — The cabin is currently closed for the winter season. Cheoah Point Cabin 2 reopens April 15, 2026 and is reservable through October 31, 2026. The boat launch at Cheoah Point Recreation Area remains open year-round.

About

Cheoah Point Cabin 2 sits within the Cheoah Point Recreation Area on a peninsula in Santeetlah Lake, surrounded by mature mixed hardwood forest in the Nantahala National Forest. This primitive cabin offers a quiet lakefront retreat with views of the 76-mile shoreline reservoir and surrounding mountains. The cabin features two rooms: a front room with a full bed frame and a back room with bunk bed frames. While the cabin has interior lighting and ceiling fans, there are no electrical outlets inside—only an exterior outlet on the patio. Outside, campers enjoy a patio area equipped with a charcoal grill, picnic table, and lantern post. Modern amenities include flush toilets and hot water showers located approximately 150 feet from the cabin, with water spigots dispersed throughout the campground. Guests should bring mattress pads, bedding, cooking supplies, and coolers. The recreation area provides excellent water-based activities on Santeetlah Lake, including a designated swim beach, boat ramp, fishing for bass, walleye, trout, crappie and bream, plus opportunities for power boating, sailing, jet skiing, and water skiing. The Wauchecha Bald Trail begins directly across from the recreation area, starting as an easy hike before ascending eight miles to connect with the Appalachian Trail. Birders may spot spotted sandpipers, osprey, red crossbills, green herons, and various warblers during migration periods. Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies just a short distance away, making this an ideal base camp for exploring the region's premier mountain landscapes and hiking opportunities.

Directions

From Robbinsville, North Carolina, continue north on Highway 129 for approximately 6 miles. Turn left on SR 1145 (Thunderbird Mountain Road). Continue approximately 1.3 miles on Thunderbird Mountain Road to Cheoah Point Campground. The cabin is located within the campground.
