Tow String Horse Camp

Closed — Closed for the season. The campground operates from April through October. Reservations required and available through Recreation.gov.

About

Tow String Horse Camp sits in the North Carolina portion of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, four miles north of Cherokee along Newfound Gap Road. This equestrian-only campground features three primitive campsites designed specifically for horseback riders and their animals. The camp operates seasonally and requires advance reservations through Recreation.gov. Unlike some horse camps in the park, Tow String does not provide horse stalls or hitching posts. Campers must tie their horses to their own trailers and are strictly prohibited from tying horses to trees. Each campsite accommodates up to four horses and six people, with a picnic table, lantern post, and fire ring provided. Portable toilets serve the campground, but no potable water is available for humans; horses can drink from a nearby stream. The camp provides access to miles of horseback riding trails that wind through the ancient mountains of the Smokies. Beyond equestrian activities, the surrounding area offers exceptional hiking, trout fishing in mountain streams, and wildlife viewing opportunities including black bears, white-tailed deer, and elk. The park's 800 miles of trails and rich Southern Appalachian cultural history make Tow String an ideal base camp for exploring one of America's most biodiverse protected areas.
