Cheoah Point Cabin 1
Closed — Closed for the season. Reopens April 15, 2026. The boat launch remains open year-round.
About
Located in the Cheoah Point Recreation Area within the Nantahala National Forest, this cabin sits on a peninsula jutting into Santeetlah Lake, a man-made reservoir offering 76 miles of shoreline. The cabin is part of a recreation area that includes tent and RV camping sites, a swim beach, and boat launch facilities. Surrounded by mixed hardwood forest, the location provides a peaceful setting with scenic mountain views across the lake. Santeetlah Lake is ideal for a variety of water activities including fishing, power boating, non-motorized boating, sailing, jet skiing, and water skiing. Anglers can expect to find bass, walleye, trout, crappie, and bream. The lake features numerous coves and inlets to explore. Birders may spot spotted sandpipers, osprey, red crossbills, green herons, and various warbler species depending on the season. The Wauchecha Bald Trail is located directly across from the recreation area, starting as an easy hike and becoming more challenging over its eight-mile length, eventually connecting to the Appalachian Trail. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is a short distance away, making an ideal day trip destination.
