About
Cebolla Mesa Campground sits at 7,300 feet elevation on the rim of the dramatic Rio Grande Gorge, about 8 miles southwest of Questa in Carson National Forest. The small campground has just 5 sites scattered through a piñon-juniper woodland, offering a quiet, primitive camping experience with vault toilet facilities. The primary draw is access to the Cebolla Mesa Trail, a moderately strenuous path that drops 800 feet down the gorge walls to reach the Rio Grande Wild and Scenic River. Anglers can fish for Rio Grande cutthroat trout at the confluence with the Red River. Special catch-and-release regulations apply to protect native trout populations. Access is via Forest Road 9, a dirt and gravel route that becomes hazardous in wet or muddy conditions. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations required.
Directions
From Questa, drive 4.9 miles south on State Highway 522 to Forest Road 9. Turn west and drive 3.4 miles on the dirt/gravel road to the campground. FR 9 is hazardous in muddy conditions.
