Gumboot Campground

Closed — Closed for the season. The campground typically operates from late May through October but closes by early November due to snow. The area becomes inaccessible during winter months.

About

Gumboot Campground is a primitive, no-fee camping area located at 6,050 feet elevation on the north shore of Gumboot Lake in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The campground sits in a scenic open bowl surrounded by grassy areas and mixed conifer forest, with spectacular views of Mt. Shasta and the Trinity Alps. At least 6 undeveloped campsites feature user-created fire rings but no picnic tables. A vault toilet is provided, but visitors must bring their own water or treat/filter lake water. The area is suitable for tents and mid-size RVs or trailers. The shallow alpine lake is popular for fishing (rainbow and brook trout) and non-motorized boating. A smaller lake lies a short distance to the west. Hikers can drive 2 miles from the campground to the Gumboot Trailhead to access the Pacific Crest Trail, which leads 2.5 miles south to the Seven Lakes Basin. This is one of three alpine lakes on the district accessible by passenger car. The access road (Forest Route 26) follows the South Fork Sacramento River canyon and is narrow in places, requiring cautious driving.

Directions

From Mt. Shasta city, head west on Lake Street over the freeway to the stop sign at Old Stage Road. Turn left (south) and drive 1/4 mile to a fork in the road. Stay right at the fork and continue on W.A. Barr Road. In 2 miles, cross the dam at Lake Siskiyou. Keep driving around the lake past the entrance to Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort. Continue on the paved road (Forest Route 26) for approximately 10 miles. The road follows the canyon of the South Fork Sacramento River and is narrow in places. When you reach a fork in the road, take the left road 1/2 mile to Gumboot Lake.
