Gumboot Campground
Open for the 2026 season. The campground typically operates from late May through early November, depending on snow conditions. First-come, first-served with no fees. A valid California Campfire Permit is required for campfires and camp stoves.
About
Gumboot Campground sits on the north side of Gumboot Lake, a shallow alpine lake in the Shasta-Trinity National Forest at approximately 6,050 feet elevation. The lake occupies a broad open bowl surrounded by grassy meadows and mixed conifer forest, with views of Mt. Shasta and the Trinity Alps. A smaller lake lies a short distance to the west. This is a primitive, undeveloped campground with at least 6 sites featuring user-created fire rings and vault toilet facilities. There are no picnic tables, no potable water, and no fees. Campers must bring their own water or filter from the lake. The area is suitable for tents and small to mid-size RVs or trailers. Fishing and non-motorized boating are the most popular activities at the lake. Hikers can drive 2 miles from the lake to the Gumboot Trailhead for access to the Pacific Crest Trail. From there, it is an easy 2.5-mile hike south on the PCT to explore the Seven Lakes Basin.
Directions
From Mt. Shasta city, head west on Lake Street over the freeway to the stop sign at Old Stage Road. Turn left (south) and drive 1/4 mile to a fork in the road. Stay right and continue on W.A. Barr Road. In 2 miles, cross the dam at Lake Siskiyou. Continue past Lake Siskiyou Camp Resort on Forest Route 26 for approximately 10 miles. The road follows the South Fork Sacramento River canyon and is narrow in places. At the fork, take the left road 1/2 mile to Gumboot Lake.
