About

Capulin Campground sits in a forested setting of spruce, fir, and aspen along US Highway 64 in the Taos Canyon area of Carson National Forest. Despite being roadside, the campground offers a peaceful retreat with the Rio Fernando de Taos flowing along its edge, providing easy access to stream fishing for trout. The campground serves as a convenient base for day hiking, with the Capulin Ice Caves Trail (#109) starting at the back of the campground and leading to a unique ice cave waterfall formation. The 11 single sites are well-suited for tents and smaller camping setups. This is a basic, no-frills Forest Service campground operating on a first-come, first-served basis. Campers should bring their own drinking water as none is available on-site. A single vault toilet provides the only facility. The nearby La Sombra and Shady Brook areas offer additional services.

Directions

From Taos, drive 7 miles east on US Highway 64 through Taos Canyon. The campground is on the right side of the road.
