About
Upper La Junta Campground sits at approximately 9,400 feet elevation in the Carson National Forest, surrounded by dense stands of spruce, fir, and quaking aspen. The eight campsites are spread along the Rio La Junta, providing a peaceful forest setting with direct access to stream fishing for native trout. The campground sees relatively light use compared to other Carson NF sites, making it a good choice for those seeking solitude. The area is especially popular with motorcyclists who enjoy the winding mountain roads of the Enchanted Circle region. Day hiking opportunities abound in the surrounding Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and the campground serves as an excellent base for exploring the backcountry. Campers should note that potable water is not available on site, so all drinking water must be packed in. Access is via Forest Road 76 from the small community of Tres Ritos. The road is closed to vehicles from January 1 through April 30 each year due to snow, effectively making this a seasonal campground despite no formal closure. Sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis only.
