About
Camp Roosevelt Recreation Area holds a unique place in American history as the site of the nation's first Civilian Conservation Corps camp, established during the Great Depression under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The CCC initiative provided employment for young men while protecting natural resources, and this Virginia location launched that transformative program. Visitors can follow a path through the original camp area and view the foundations where buildings once stood. The campground offers 10 primitive sites shaded by towering oak trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere for tent camping or small RVs. Sites include picnic tables, and vault toilets are available near the camping loop and picnic area. There is no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations; payment of $10 per night can be made via the Recreation.gov Scan & Pay app or by cash/check in the iron ranger. Quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Pets are welcome but must remain on a leash no longer than 6 feet. Bear safety protocols apply, requiring proper food storage and disposal.
