About

Camp Roosevelt Campground holds a unique place in American history as the location of the first Civilian Conservation Corps camp in the nation, established in 1933. The CCC was one of the most successful New Deal programs, and Camp Roosevelt served as the model for thousands of camps that followed. Today, visitors can follow an interpretive path through the original camp site and view the foundations where barracks and administrative buildings once stood. The campground offers 10 primitive sites nestled beneath towering oak trees that create a shaded, peaceful atmosphere. This is a dry campground with no potable water, so campers must bring their own supply. Portable restrooms are placed near the campground loop and picnic area. Each site has a picnic table. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations. Located in Shenandoah County, the campground provides access to the surrounding George Washington National Forest for hiking, wildlife viewing, and exploring the rich history of the Civilian Conservation Corps era.
