About

Boca Chita Campground offers a unique boat-in camping experience on one of Biscayne National Park's most beautiful islands. Located on Boca Chita Key, this campground is only accessible by private boat and requires safe navigation using nautical charts or GPS. The island features 21 designated campsites in an open, grassy area with stunning waterfront views, picnic tables, and grills. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis, and visitors must physically arrive at the island to claim and pay for sites using the Recreation.gov mobile app via QR code. The island's centerpiece is the historic 65-foot lighthouse built by Mark Honeywell in the 1930s. While the lighthouse interior is currently closed due to ongoing restoration work that began in January 2025, the structure remains an iconic landmark visible from the water. When park staff are available, the observation deck may be opened, providing panoramic views of the surrounding islands, Biscayne Bay, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Miami skyline. A half-mile hiking trail begins near the restrooms and winds through the island to emerge near the pavilion at the south end. Facilities are basic but functional. Flush toilets are available year-round, but there is no potable water, showers, or sinks on the island. Campers must bring all necessary water and supplies and pack out all trash, as there is no trash collection service. The harbor entrance has approximately four feet of depth at low tide. Pets are not permitted on Boca Chita Key or in boats docked in the harbor, with the exception of ADA-defined service animals. Docking fees apply Friday through Monday and on federal holidays, with separate camping fees charged per night.
