About
Mitchell Landing Campground is a primitive camping destination within Big Cypress National Preserve, offering 11 sites along a secondary gravel road. The campground is particularly popular with airboat enthusiasts, as it provides direct access to the Stairstep backcountry unit, the only area in the preserve open to airboats. Visitors with an off-road vehicle permit can access airboat trails directly from the campground. The campground accommodates tents, RVs, and travel trailers up to 35 feet in length. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets are available, but campers must bring their own water as none is available on-site. The facility meets minimum ADA requirements for access. Cell phone service is limited in this remote area. Situated along the popular Loop Road scenic drive, Mitchell Landing offers opportunities for hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The freshwaters of the Big Cypress Swamp support a diverse ecosystem home to the elusive Florida panther and a mixture of tropical and temperate plant communities. The preserve protects over 720,000 acres of vital habitat essential to the health of the neighboring Everglades and marine estuaries along Florida's southwest coast.
Directions
From US Highway 41, turn onto Loop Road at mile marker 40. The east entrance to Loop Road offers easier access for larger vehicles. Follow Loop Road approximately seven miles and turn left into the campground.
