Black Rock Mountain State Park

Open — Open year-round with reservations available. The park may temporarily close during periods of icy weather due to its 3,640-foot elevation.

Special Weather Statement issued April 12 at 1:04PM EDT by NWS Greenville-Spartanburg SC

1:04 PM — 8:00 PM

Relative humidity values are on track to fall below 30 percent again this afternoon as winds pick up from the south. Given the dry vegetation, outdoor fires will be able to spread quickly once started. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities on whether you can burn today. If you do burn, use extreme caution as fires can quickly get out of hand under these conditions.

About

Black Rock Mountain State Park occupies 1,743 acres atop the Eastern Continental Divide in Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains, reaching elevations of 3,640 feet as the highest state park in the state. The main campground features 44 sites suitable for tents and RVs up to 25 feet, each equipped with water, 30-amp electric, and cable TV hookups. Sites are well-shaded beneath flowering rhododendrons and majestic oaks. For those seeking more solitude, the park offers 12 walk-in campsites at Hickory Cove on the southeastern slope and 4 primitive backcountry sites, all equipped with bear boxes for secure food storage. A pioneer campground is also available for groups. The park's high elevation provides spectacular scenery, with roadside overlooks offering 80-mile vistas across pristine Appalachian forests. Four main hiking trails totaling 11 miles wind through diverse ecosystems, passing wildflowers, streams, small waterfalls, and lush forests. The 17-acre Black Rock Lake is circled by an easy 0.85-mile walking trail and popular with anglers. The summit visitor center features panoramic views, a gift shop, and picnic facilities. At 3,640 feet, Black Rock Mountain experiences cooler temperatures than most Georgia parks, providing welcome relief during summer months. However, the elevation also means the park may temporarily close during winter ice storms. RV campers should be comfortable navigating steep, winding mountain roads. The park's location in Rabun County places it near numerous attractions including the Appalachian Trail, Tallulah Gorge State Park, and Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Directions

From Clayton, Georgia, take U.S. Highway 441 North for approximately 3 miles. Turn left onto Black Rock Mountain Parkway and follow the steep, winding road for about 2.5 miles to reach the park entrance.
