Black Kettle Campground is located within the Black Kettle National Grassland near Cheyenne, Oklahoma, offering a quiet camping experience in the prairie grasslands at 2,100 feet elevation. The campground features 12 camping units available on a first-come, first-served basis with no advance reservations accepted. The small size of the campground means arriving early in the day is recommended to secure a site, particularly during weekends and peak seasons. The campground provides access to Black Kettle Lake for motorized boating, fishing, and nature viewing. Miles of hiking trails wind through the grasslands, offering opportunities for wildlife observation and exploring the prairie ecosystem. Each campsite includes a picnic table and fire pit, with potable water and vault toilets available at the campground. The maximum RV length is 35 feet, and campers are limited to 14 consecutive days. The Black Kettle National Grassland encompasses over 30,000 acres of rolling prairie and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands. The area is named after Chief Black Kettle of the Cheyenne and is close to the Washita Battlefield National Historic Site. The campground operates year-round and is free of charge, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers seeking an off-the-beaten-path prairie camping experience.
