About

Bishop Mountain Cabin is a historic one-room cabin constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938. Originally serving as housing for Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management fire lookout personnel, the cabin remained in active use until the early 1980s. A historic fire lookout tower stands nearby. The cabin sits at 7,800 feet on the summit of Bishop Mountain along the western border of Henry's Fork Caldera, an 18-mile by 23-mile volcanic formation just west of Yellowstone National Park. The cabin features two sets of bunkbeds with mattress pads, a dining table and chairs, and cooking pots with dishes and tableware. A wood cook stove provides heat and cooking capability, with firewood supplied. A vault toilet is located in a separate building. No running water or electricity is available; guests must bring their own drinking water, bedding, matches, lighting, and first aid supplies, and must pack out all trash. Access from early June through mid-November requires approximately 16 miles of travel on high-clearance gravel roads; four-wheel drive pickup trucks are mandatory. During winter months from November through May, the cabin is accessible only by snowmobile or other snow travel means on ungroomed roads. Nearby recreation includes mountain biking on logging roads, hiking, snowmobiling, horseback riding, hunting, and berry picking. Harriman State Park lies approximately 14 miles east within the Yellowstone Ecosystem wildlife refuge.
