About

Bishop Mountain Cabin is a historic one-room cabin built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1938 that formerly housed Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management employees watching for forest fires. The cabin sits at 7,800 feet on the summit of Bishop Mountain, surrounded by pine forest and offering expansive views of Island Park Reservoir and surrounding peaks. A historic fire lookout tower stands nearby. The cabin accommodates up to four people with two sets of bunkbeds with mattress pads, a dining table and chairs, cooking pots, dishes, and tableware. A wood cook stove is provided for heating and cooking, with firewood supplied. A vault toilet is located in a separate building. No running water, electricity, indoor plumbing, bedding, or lighting is provided. Guests must bring their own water supply and pack out all trash. Located 16 miles southwest of Island Park within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, the cabin is accessible via U.S. Highway 20, then 16 miles of high-clearance gravel roads requiring a 4WD vehicle from early June through mid-November. During winter months from late November through May, access is by snowmobile or other over-snow means along an ungroomed route. The area offers hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding trails, and is popular with hunters and berry pickers. Nearby attractions include Harriman State Park 14 miles east, known for excellent fly-fishing and wildlife viewing, and Yellowstone National Park 30 miles north.
