About

Big Creek Campground is a small, rustic campground tucked into the Idaho Panhandle National Forests along Big Creek in Shoshone County. With just 9 campsites, the campground offers a quiet, backcountry experience for campers seeking solitude and access to natural recreation. The campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis during its May through September season and costs $10 per night for a single site with two vehicles included, plus $5 for an additional vehicle (3 vehicle maximum per site). The campground features vault toilets and a day use area, but no potable water is available on-site, so campers must bring their own. A pack-in, pack-out waste management system is in place, requiring visitors to take all trash with them. The site sits at the location of a former Civilian Conservation Corps camp, adding historical interest to the area. Recreation opportunities abound, including fishing in Big Creek, access to National Recreation Trails for hiking, hunting during season, berry picking, and wildlife viewing. The remote location requires traveling 24 miles east of St. Maries to Calder on the St. Joe River Road, then following County Road 5 miles east and 3 miles north on Big Creek Road #537. The campground layout can accommodate groups informally, making it suitable for family or friend gatherings seeking a primitive camping experience.
