About

Big Creek Campground is a remote, primitive campground situated next to the Big Creek airstrip deep within the Payette National Forest. With only four walk-in campsites nestled near a small stream that feeds into Big Creek, this campground provides a tranquil basecamp for accessing the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness, the largest contiguous wilderness area in the lower 48 states. The campground is particularly popular with backcountry pilots who fly into the adjacent airstrip for overnight stays. Trail access to the wilderness begins north on FR 371, and fishing opportunities abound in Big Creek. The Big Creek Work Station is located nearby. Facilities are minimal but functional, featuring an accessible vault toilet and a hand pump for drinking water. All sites include picnic tables. This is a pack-in/pack-out campground with no trash service. The remote location means limited to no cellular service, so visitors should download the Recreation.gov app before arrival if they wish to pay via QR code.

Directions

From McCall, travel 86 miles northeast via Big Creek Road (FR 371). From Yellow Pine, go 18 miles east on East Fork Road (FR 412), Profile Gap Road (FR 340), and Big Creek-Smith Creek Road (FR 371). The road is narrow and winding; allow approximately 1.5 hours from Yellow Pine.
